Post-COVID Travel, Nepal

Nepal is trying to pull through the travel and tourism sector that was badly hit by the pandemic. The reopening has come with limitations and is mainly restricted to those seeking to climb famous peaks. As, Nepal is residence to eight of the 14 highest mountains in the world, trekking has been the primary activity of tourists in Nepal.  Numbers of them get to the Himalayas, few of them doing the hiking while most of them take on a month long trek through valleys and go by high mountains. Everest and Annapurna is the two admired trekking region where different trail can be followed.

Tourists before leaving their countries are required to take a corona virus test, stay for a week in quarantine at a hotel in Kathmandu and then take another coronavirus test before being allowed to travel ahead. As a replacement for a visa on arrival, visitors now need to get a prior permit, give details of their journey, hire a local supervising company and have health insurance that covers COVID-19 treatment.

A significant inflow is predicted for spring 2021 climbing season, especially for Mount Everest. Mountaineers looking to scale Nepal’s Himalayan peaks will finally be able to do so after seven months of lockdown leading to the positive contribution in tourism industry.  Still, with the virus continuing to spread in many parts of the world, it will take time for things to return to normal.
